Your skin barrier is the body’s quiet guardian. Over-layering strong actives or exfoliating too often can leave it irritated, tight, or red. Dermatology guidance encourages a cautious approach to exfoliation and mixing actives like retinoids or benzoyl peroxide. Moisturisers, think humectants, emollients, and occlusives, help reduce water loss and support repair, which is why emollients are a mainstay in clinical pathways. With fewer products, you also reduce exposure to common cosmetic allergens such as some fragrances and preservatives. And the basics really do the heavy lifting: a gentle cleanse, a well-chosen moisturiser, and daily SPF are widely recommended starting points

A calm template
AM: Cleanse (or just rinse if dry/sensitive), moisturise, protect with broad-spectrum SPF 30+.
PM: Gentle cleanse, moisturise. Add one treatment on some nights only, once skin is comfortable. If you’re reactive, pause exfoliation for a couple of weeks, then reintroduce 1–2× weekly as tolerated.
